The new type of photo browsing app made its’ debut in the Nokia beta testing site.

The tool is designed to be used with S60 and 5th edition touch screen handsets, that’s Nokia Xpress 5800 and the soon to be released N97.

The Mag Glass feature works like a zoom on a magnifying glass so you can focus in on minute details in a photo.

Nokia Conversations went as far as to say the feature was “polished”. There’s already a really cool video of it in action up on YouTube.

Ovi Nokia App Store Opening in May

ovi

If the latest news from the San Francisco Game Developers Conference is to be believed, the Nokia Ovi store will be opening its digital doors in May and at the same time rolling out to 9 other countries in Europe.

Unlike the Android Store and Apple’s App Store, publishers can set their own prices in the Nokia store. Publishers can also get as much as 70% return on all the sales they make

The Ovi store will  have a social element to it with users being able to upload their content onto the site. It’s still unclear whether they’ll be able to charge without being classified as publishers.

Users will be able to share links to download with their friends and track anything they want to share.

With theN97 due to hit stores in May, it’s an exciting time for Nokia.

N97 Vs iPhone

03.13.09 | Permalink | Comment?

n97-vs-iphone

If I was an iPhone I think I’d been feeling constantly under-attack. Every time a new phone is released, BAM let’s compare it to the iPhone. I’d be like, ‘Just leave me alone, why do you always have to compare me to other phones, can’t you just appreciate me for what I am?’

Sorry iPhone, here’s another attack on your increasingly fragile ego. But this time, it’s a worthy competitor - the Nokia N97. Fanfare.

Unfortunately it’s not a true comparison, theNokiaN97.com does not have an actual N97 to hand, but they have a nice picture of the two adversaries. Instead NokiaN97 speculates on why Nokia’s latest is better than Apple’s only handset. Here’s a potted break down.

  • Resolution - N97 - 360×640 Vs iPhone’s pitiful 320 x 480
  • Keyboard - N97 - Physical keyboard, bigger, wider, better typing experience Vs iPhone on screen keyboard but this depends on a user’s preference (I actually hate touchscreen keyboards, so thumbs down from me)
  • Headphones - N97 3.5 audio jack compatible with all headphones Vs iPhone which supports selected headphones (why so exclusive Apple, get over yourself)
  • Memory - N97 - 32GM of built in memory Vs iPhone 8 or 16GB of memory (depending on model)
  • Camera - N97 - 5 megapixel camera, LED flash, autofocus, Carl Zweiss optics Vs iPhone - 2 megapixel camera (might as well use a disposable camera)
  • Battery - N97 - removable battery Vs iPhone - no-removable battery

Good job theNokiaN97, join in the debate in their forum

Phone Death Match: Nokia N97 vs Samsung Tocco Ultra

03.13.09 | Permalink | Comment?

Stylish slider? Check. 5Mp Camera? Check. Touch Screen UI? Check.

The Tocco and the N97 are Nokia and Samsung’s the two super smart phones.

Nokia went as far as to call the it the “ultimate portable computer” and Sony Ericsson said their Samsung Tocco Ultra was the “ultimate touch screen for the mobile person”.

But which one should you be spending your money on? We lined them up to compare the stats.

The high resolution wide TFT, LCD display makes navigation easier on the Tooco  and it only weighs 106 grams so it’s easy to carry around and fit in your pocket.

tocco

With its black coated shell and shiny interior, the Tocco is the sexier of the two phones. It fully supports email, SMS, instant messaging, and large file web downloads and is HTML compatible so browsing won’t be slow or jittery either.

The 8 mega pixel camera with dual power LED flash with an integrated smile shot feature means that you’ll also get quality pictures with every shot you take aswell.

The Nokia N97 has managed to carve out an enviable spot out for itself in the crowded N-Series market.

The phone’s full-size slide out QWERTY keyboard makes sending emails and texting speedier and easier. It’s particularly popular with business users who have to write out long emails . This is also helped by the fact that the screen can turn to horizontal mode after a swift shake of the handset.

The 5 megapixel camera is smaller than the Tocco’s 8. But this is made up for with a massive 32 GB of storage, double that of any other mobile handset available. The storage space jumps up another 16 GB when you add in the phone’s micro SD ,to a whopping 48GB. It really is that portable computer that Nokia keep mentioning.  It also has a stand time of 430 hours.

With dimensions of 52 x 110 x 13 mm, the Tocco is just that little bit shorter and thinner than the N97 (55 x 117 x 13 mm). But there is something in having a phone that’s just a little big bigger and sturdier.

They say bigger is better, after all.

Kinetic Scrolling On The N97

03.06.09 | Permalink | Comment?

This video, courtesy of AllAboutSymbian.com, shows hows kinetic scrolling works on the N97. Like the iPhone and the G1, flick scrolling makes navigating web pages a seamless experience. Scroll down a page with a flick of a finger and zoom into web pages simply with a double tap. It looks pretty impressive, definitely on a par with the iPhone and the G1. The other interesting aspect of the video is how widgets will work on the N97. In this video you can see Bloomburg and Facebook widgets but in the future there will also be MySpace widgets and LinkedIn widgets and many more.
