Nokia are moving into the world of netbooks!
At the Mobile World Conference , Nokia CEO Olli Pekka Kellassvo let slip that Nokia were “looking very actively at this opportunity”.
Over the past year the cut price mini lap tops have transformed how the PC companies do things. Companies like Dell, Intel and Sony et all can’t get away with their big marks ups anymore.
Don’t get too excited yet, the laptop isn’t due for release until 2011 and if the rumours are to be believed, Nokia are looking to the n97 as a framework for the design.
Eldar Murtazin from mobile-review.com, one of the best connected phone journos there is, was privileged enough to get into the inner sanctum of the media scrum to find out who was doing what, for as far ahead as 2011 - the rest of us can only dream.
The Nokia Sparrow will run on Linux, have a multi-slide keyboard and a display that’s similar to the Nokia n97 handset. The design of the netbook doesn’t follow the current trend going more MID way, with a passing resemblance to the Nokia N800 internet tablet. Different layouts and keys that slide out in different directions. a lot like the n97’s tilting display.
All this of course backs up Kellassvo’s previous statement that Nokia are wanting to change the definition of the smart phone “into categories and form factors that have not yet been explored.”
A mock up of the handset by wiredview.com gave it diamond-shaped keys, about half the size of normal keys.
The operating system is also victim to a load of second guessing predictions ranging from transparent interfaces to multiple applications capable of storing data in the machine’s memory for months at a time. So when it comes to writing a document or email, you can just wipe your finger through the screen and semi-transparent panels with active or pre-set applications and your content will pop up.
They even had a mock up of the Sparrow.
Shame it’s not real yet, but all in good time my friends, all in good time.
